Dr. Joy, a ceremonialist of 29 years, began her journey in Brazil in 1994. There she partook of ayahuasca in a workshop setting, and the experience was so profound that a year later she was living in that community. She spent three years in Brazil, studying with masters of ceremonial journeying and receiving deep healing herself. Along the way, she encountered many supremely gifted spiritual healers and developed a riveting interest in how to integrate the immensity of the experiences she was having and saw others having, too.

She has also encountered Sao Pedro, Jurema, Santo Daime, frog medicine, cannabis, LSD, MDA, mescaline/peyote and cacao. She has experimented with numerous ways of "changing state," including music, dance, meditation, drumming, numerous types of therapy, exercise, chanting, chi gong, yoga, Dahn Hak, breath work, tinctures, essential oils, color therapy and many forms of ritual. She has taken numerous groups to Brazil to partake of spiritual healing and ayahuasca and is an elder in one of the indigenous traditions.
